Carcinoma of cervix is a major killer of women due to Cancers. It is the second largest cancer of women worldwide, with 604,100 new cases and 341,831 deaths in 2020 [1]. In India also, it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for females [2]. The American Cancer Society’s estimates about 13,960 new cases of invasive cervical cancer and about 4310 deaths in the United States in 2023[https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cervical-cancer/about/key-statistics.html].

Carcinoma of cervix is caused by a virus, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV-16 and/or HPV-18 infection of cervical cells renders Pap smear abnormal and leads through various stages to carcinoma of cervix. We have developed a Polyherbal formulation named BASANT (meaning Spring season), which has praise-worthy properties of not only killing HPV-16/18 but also eliminating this virus entrenched in cervical cells. Reproduced below are the results of a clinical trial concluded in 11women positive for HPV. They were administered a Capsule of BASANT intra-vaginally every night for 30 days. On re-examination, 11 out of 11women became HPV negative.

Polyherbal formulation named as BASANT, is composed of Curcumin (diferuloyl methane), Aloe vera, purified extracts of Amla (Emblica Officinalis) and Neem (Azadirachta Indica) along with pharmacopially approved excipients [4].  It is dispensed in powder form in Capsules.

BASANT is also effective against a variety of infections such as all WHO strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, including those resistant to antibiotics such as Penicillin, Tetracycline, Nalidixic acid and Ciprofloxacin (Table 1).

BASANT has also shown efficacy against Candida glabrata, Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis including strains resistant to azole drugs and amphotericin B (Table 2).  BASANT inhibits Chlamydia trachomatis, whether present in free-state or within a cell [5].

To sum up, BASANT is a marvelous formulation totally free of side effects and effective against a whole range of vaginal infections, and eliminates HPV16 from the infected cells on path of progression to carcinoma of cervix. BASANT is passed onto M/s Bipha Drugs, Kottayam, Kerala for making it available to women all over the world at a modest cost.
